Approved Self-service Product

AWS Service Catalog title slide

Summary

English

CloudFormation targets infrastructure authors, while AWS Service Catalog adds a product layer above it. Administrators publish reviewed network stacks, servers, applications, or other solutions as products; end users browse and provision them without understanding templates, resource dependencies, or detailed underlying permissions. The value is combining agility with governance: users have self-service, but only from approved, versioned, and constrained choices. The classic exam path is a CloudFormation-backed product, while supported product types can evolve.

Transcript

00:00 Hello and welcome to this lecture,

00:02 AWS Service Catalog.

00:03 So at the last lecture we saw AWS cloud formations

00:06 which help us automate the creation of AWS resources.

00:10 And for that, you have to write the template

00:12 in JSON or YAML format,

00:14 and then cloud formation does the rest.

00:16 Now AWS service catalog is just one level above that.

00:19 That means it abstracts the use

00:22 of AWS cloud formation templates

00:25 and then dependencies between the resources,

00:27 the permissions for launching those resources,

00:29 everything is wrapped inside a product

00:32 and then end user will just see it as a product,

00:34 they can browse through the product list

00:36 and they just launch it.

00:38 So AWS service catalog allows users

00:41 to launch group of approved IT resources

00:43 as a product in a self-service manner.

00:46 So if you grant access to those users for those products,

00:50 they can only launch those products

00:52 and then you can very well control

00:53 which user can launch which products,

00:56 which users cannot, all that can be managed.

00:59 Now underlying it users, cloud formation as I said,

01:01 so ultimately administrator

01:04 has to create a cloud formation template

01:06 but then end user doesn't need to care about that.

AWS Service Catalog features including product sharing and launch constraints

Summary

English

Multiple provisioning artifacts represent product versions. A portfolio combines products, constraints, and authorized principals into a governance boundary. Portfolios can be shared across accounts and distributed through AWS Organizations to accounts or OUs. A launch constraint specifies the IAM role Service Catalog uses when provisioning, so users need permission to access and provision the product without directly receiving every underlying VPC, EC2, or IAM permission. This is not a permission bypass: Service Catalog access, the launch role, PassRole behavior, and portfolio access must all be authorized correctly.

Transcript

01:10 These products can also be shared across AWS account,

01:14 AWS organization units or even across AWS organization.

01:18 That means if you create the service catalog products

01:22 in your management account

01:24 and then there are member accounts in the organization,

01:26 all the member accounts can launch the products

01:29 if these products have been shared with those users.

01:32 Now with respect to the IAM permissions

01:35 typically for launching cloud formation template

01:37 or creating cloud formation stack,

01:38 users needs to have all the permissions

01:41 which are required to create those AWS resources

01:44 but then with AWS service catalog launch constraint

01:47 you can define what are permissions

01:50 this product requires to launch AWS resources.

01:53 So irrespective of whether user has that permissions or not,

01:57 you can still manage those permissions

01:59 as a part of launch constraint.

02:00 So, and again, the benefit is that you don't need

02:03 to grant users all those permissions,

02:05 but then you are managing those permissions internally.

AWS Service Catalog product features including parameters launch constraints and support information

Summary

English

At provisioning time, users can supply exposed template parameters such as environment, instance size, or CIDR size. Administrators can restrict allowed values with template constraints and standardize metadata with mechanisms such as TagOptions. Products and portfolios can also provide support descriptions, email addresses, and URLs. After provisioning, CloudFormation outputs can expose endpoints, IP addresses, or resource IDs. Parameters provide controlled variation and should not allow users to escape into unapproved architectures or permissions through overly broad input.

Transcript

02:09 Users can also optionally provide the parameters.

02:12 So if you know about the cloud formation,

02:14 if you want to parameterize something,

02:15 maybe EC2 instant size for development environment,

02:19 you want that user can choose different sizes.

02:21 Similarly for production environment or staging environment,

02:24 there are different kind of parameters

02:25 available for users to choose.

02:27 Now, same parameters can be applied

02:29 for the AWS service catalog products as well.

02:32 So this gives bit of flexibility to your users

02:35 to put or select the right parameter

02:38 according to which enrollment they're launching

02:41 these products for.

02:42 Administrator can also provide details like support email.

02:45 Now this gives users an experience

02:48 like they're launching any third party products, right?

02:50 If something goes bad or user need help,

02:53 they need to write to someone.

02:55 So as an administrator, with your products and portfolios

02:59 you could also provide a support email in that case.

03:03 And then finally, the output section,

03:06 similar to the cloud formation

03:07 where you can write an output section

03:09 so that after creating the cloud formation stack,

03:12 user may know what their EC2 instance IP is

03:15 if you include that in your output section

03:18 or maybe your cloud formation is creating a web server

03:21 then what the URL of that web server,

03:23 all this can be managed

03:25 through the cloud formation output section

03:27 and the same thing is applied

03:29 to service catalog products as well.

4. Author Template → Create Product → Group in Portfolio → Grant Access → Provisioned Product

AWS Service Catalog workflow from administrator-authored templates through portfolios to users

Summary

English

An administrator authors a template, creates a product and versions, adds them to a portfolio, associates users, groups, or roles or shares the portfolio with other accounts or OUs, and configures launch, template, tag, or other constraints. Users see only authorized products, select a version and parameters, and provision them. The backend commonly creates or updates a CloudFormation stack that Service Catalog manages as a provisioned product. When an exam asks to productize a standard network stack, hide CloudFormation complexity, and provide governed team self-service, choose Service Catalog rather than merely handing users templates or broader IAM permissions.

Transcript

03:32 So those are kind of features of service catalog.

03:35 And if you want to just look at how it works,

03:37 so administrator will write a template.

03:40 Ultimately someone has to write the template,

03:42 and then administrator will create multiple products

03:45 out of those templates.

03:47 And then he or she can group those products

03:50 in the form of product portfolio.

03:53 And then once the portfolio is created,

03:55 now this portfolio can be granted access to different users

03:59 either from your same AWS account or different AWS account

04:03 or an account in different AWS organization.

04:07 Now the user who gets this access can then browse

04:11 all the products for which they have the access to

04:14 and they will just launch those products.

04:17 In the back end, AWS will create a cloud formation stack

04:21 according to the products that user has chosen

04:24 and then users ultimately get access to those stacks.

04:27 Now, if you look at from the user's lens,

04:30 then it is as simple as just browsing

04:32 through all the products, selecting the product

04:35 and launching the product.

04:36 That's it, it's as simple as that.

04:38 So ultimately, AWS service catalog is a service

04:42 which gives product as a service experience to your users

04:45 and underlying its uses AWS cloud formation.

04:49 So we have just seen this at very, very high level

04:51 but if the question talks about productizing

04:54 your network stack

04:57 and then hiding the complexity of cloud formation,

05:00 then AWS service catalog is the right service.

05:03 So that's it for this lecture.

05:05 And we'll see more AWS management

05:07 and governance services here.

05:09 So thanks for watching.

Overall Summary

English

AWS Service Catalog centers on products and versions, portfolios, constraints, sharing, and provisioned products. A launch constraint lets Service Catalog use a designated role for underlying resources, preserving self-service without granting end users broad infrastructure permissions. The portfolio controls visibility and governance scope, while CloudFormation performs the classic product's actual provisioning.
