Geoproximity routing using bias to expand or shrink a resource's geographic catchment

Summary

English

Geoproximity routing selects endpoints using the geographic locations of users and resources, while bias deliberately shifts the traffic boundary. A positive bias from 1 to 99 expands a resource's geographic catchment and attracts more users; a negative bias from -1 to -99 shrinks it and sends less traffic there.

Transcript

00:00 So now, let's talk about another feature

00:02 which is called Geoproximity Routing.

00:04 And it can be a little bit confusing

00:05 but I will try to explain with diagrams

00:07 in the very next slide to make it clear.

00:09 So this allows you to route traffic to your resources based

00:12 on the geographic location of your users and resources.

00:16 So the idea is that with this policy,

00:18 you're able using a number called the bias

00:21 to shift more traffic to resources

00:24 based on specific locations.

00:25 And it will show you this in a diagram

00:26 in the very next slide.

00:28 So the idea is that to change the size

00:30 of a geographic location, you need to specify a bias value.

00:34 If you want more traffic to go to a specific resource,

00:37 you expand the bias value by increasing it.

00:40 And if you want less traffic to go to your resource,

00:42 you shrink it, you decrease the bias values

00:45 to a negative number.

Geoproximity requirements for AWS regions, non-AWS coordinates, and Route 53 Traffic Flow

Summary

English

For an AWS resource, specify its AWS Region and Route 53 derives the location. For a non-AWS resource such as an on-premises data center, provide latitude and longitude. The course emphasizes using advanced Route 53 Traffic Flow to apply bias. On the exam, location-based routing that must attract more traffic to one resource points to geoproximity plus bias.

Transcript

00:47 So the resources can be resources from AWS,

00:50 in which case you specify the region they're in

00:52 and automatically a list will compute the correct routing.

00:56 Or if there are none, AWS resources exercise

00:59 such as your on premises data center.

01:01 Then, you will just need to specify the latitude

01:03 and longitude, so the AWS knows where they are right now.

01:07 And then it chooses feature,

01:08 you need to use the advanced Route 53 Traffic

01:11 flow to be able to leverage the bias.

01:14 So the diagram should make everything more simple.

01:17 And to me, this is what you should remember.

Zero-bias geoproximity boundary between us-west-1 and us-east-1

Summary

English

The example places resources in us-west-1 and us-east-1 with both biases set to zero. Route 53 forms a boundary near the middle of the United States: users to the left go west and users to the right go east, roughly resembling nearest-resource routing. Neither endpoint's catchment is artificially expanded or shrunk.

Transcript

01:18 So let's take an example of a resource in us-west-1,

01:24 and one resource in us-east-1.

01:27 And the bias is set to zero in both regions.

01:31 So that means that if you have users all around the US

01:34 trying to access these resources,

01:36 there's going to be a line dividing the US is too into two,

01:40 and users left of that line will go to us-west-1,

01:44 and user rights of that line will go to us-east-1.

01:48 Now, this is simple, this is when there is no bias, okay?

01:51 And this looks like going to the closest resource region

01:55 based on the user location.

User

Positive bias 50 expanding the us-east-1 geoproximity region westward

Summary

English

Keeping us-west-1 at bias 0 while setting us-east-1 to +50 expands the eastern resource's geographic region and moves the boundary west. More users who are physically farther west are now directed to us-east-1. Bias changes the catchment boundary between resources; it does not declare a fixed traffic percentage.

Transcript

01:56 But thanks to the bias, we can have the same setup

02:01 but a different way to have the users routed

02:04 to different regions.

02:04 So let's take an example.

02:06 We have us-west-1 and us-east-1,

02:08 and the bias is set to zero in us-west-1,

02:11 but we're going to have a positive bias of 50 in us-east-1.

02:16 And we've seen that the bias make more users

02:19 and more traffic to that resource.

02:21 Why?

02:22 Well, because of the bias now the quote in quote,

02:24 dividing line between the first.

02:27 The two resources is going to be a little bit more

02:29 to the left because of the higher bias of us-east-1.

02:32 And so that means is that's the user left

02:35 of that line can go to us-west-1,

02:37 but the users right or that one will go to us-east-1.

02:41 So what we do this?

02:42 Well, for example, you would set your resources

02:44 all around the world and say you needed to shift

02:47 more traffic to a specific region.

02:49 What you would do is that you will use

02:50 a Geoproximity Routing Policy to increase the bias

02:54 in that specific region.

02:55 And therefore, have more users dragged

02:58 and more users have traffic attracted to that region.

Geoproximity request arrows showing more users routed to the higher-bias east region

Summary

English

The user-to-resource arrows show that with bias +50 most users select us-east-1, while only farther-west users still choose us-west-1. The key geoproximity signal is a requirement to move a geographic boundary and shift traffic from one region to another: increase the target region's bias, or use a negative bias to reduce traffic.

Transcript

03:02 So what you to remember going into an exam is

03:04 that the Geoproximity Routing is really helpful

03:07 when you need to shift traffic

03:09 from one region to another, by increasing the bias.

03:12 Okay?

03:13 So hopefully the diagrams helped you make more sense

03:15 of the Geoproximity Routing Policy.

03:18 I hope you liked this lecture,

03:19 and I will see you in the next lecture.

Overall Summary

English

Geoproximity routing uses user and resource locations plus a -99 to +99 bias to change each resource's geographic catchment. AWS resources use regions and non-AWS resources use coordinates. Positive bias expands and attracts traffic, while negative bias shrinks. This expresses a geographic boundary shift, not a fixed percentage split.
