CloudFront maps the client IP address to a country through a geolocation database. A block list denies only the listed countries and allows everyone else. Geo restriction applies to the entire distribution across all origins, commonly to enforce copyright or content-licensing boundaries.

00:11 Well, we'll set up CloudFront
00:13 with Edge Locations and our
00:16 And we have users coming from all around the world
00:18 Here's an example of Malta and France.
00:20 Now in CloudFront you're going to define
00:22 an Allow list of countries that you
00:24 want to allow into your platform distribution.
00:26 So we have France and Portugal,
00:27 meaning the users from France can access our CloudFront
00:29 distribution, whereas the user from Malta cannot.
00:32 Now to understand this,
00:34 there's going to be a matching done at the country level
00:37 between the IP addresses of your users against a database
00:41 that matches an IP address to a specific country.
00:44 The Allow list is something you can
00:45 define our CloudFront distribution
00:47 which is to say you only allow
00:48 the list of countries into your distribution,
00:50 or you can use a Block list to prevent access from a
00:53 specific list of countries and then allow everyone else.
00:57 Now these settings apply to your entire
00:59 CloudFront distribution across all origins.
01:01 And the use case for this would be to do copyright laws,
01:03 for example, to control access to content.
